Before you start: check your immigration status

Most visas include a “no recourse to public funds” (NRPF) condition. This means you cannot claim most state benefits or council housing help, including Universal Credit, Child Benefit, Personal Independence Payment, Carer’s Allowance, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, council housing and homelessness assistance. Claiming them when you are not entitled can lead to repayment demands and can harm your current and future visa applications.
